Agile Development and Project Management
A Butler Group In House Master Class
Agile development is now in early mainstream adoption phase, whether incrementally introduced or full-scale rollout. For organisations in the various stages of adoption there are a number of questions to answer: for those still undecided the questions are whether and when to try out Agile, and if a go-ahead is decided which Agile methodology to adopt and how to ensure that the Agile adoption succeeds; for organisations already using Agile in small teams there are questions of how to deal with problems and ensure Agile projects interface well with the rest of the IT and business environment; and for those organisations that are moving beyond small scale adoption, there are questions about how to scale up Agile and also taking up Agile beyond code development and into business development.

Since the widespread adoption of the Internet by business and consumers alike, the relationship of IT to the business world has been undergoing continuous transformation. IT Governance and Cost Management

One of NASA’s CIOs very aptly summed up the scope and growing importance of IT Governance, when she said recently that “it takes more than knowledge of IT to make the right decisions about IT on behalf of the organisation". As ICT becomes more closely entwined with business operations, it is vital that IT Governance is seen not simply as a tool for running an efficient IT function, but as a corporate responsibility to ensure that IT effectively supports the strategy of the organisation, that IT risk is properly assessed and mitigated, and that the use of IT is in compliance with both internal and external policies and guidelines.

Planning a Service Oriented Architecture
A Butler Group In House Master Class
Many substantial organisations now have some experience of deploying SOA, and naturally there are mixed reports as to its success. On the positive side we hear of more effective business processes, more responsive IT, and improved integration of legacy applications. On the negative side we hear of increased complexity, less than expected re-use of services, and difficulty cost-justifying the investment. This Workshop will re-examine the current status of SOA and describe how to position it as a strategy to maximise the benefits and avoid the pitfalls.

Strategies for Information Management

William Pollard, Chairman of Fortune 500 company ServiceMaster, commented that “Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organised, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.” Today, organisations in every sector are appreciating the reality of this perspective as they strive to maintain a competitive position, or deliver effective service, in an environment that is shaped by information.

Virtualisation and Cloud Computing

The pressure on data centre managers and CIOs is increasing to extract more value from the existing hardware infrastructure and to reduce the operating costs. CIOs are also looking at methods of being able to respond to business change quickly and more effectively. Traditionally, data centres present the computing resources to users in ways dictated by implementation, location, department, or vendor. For example, consider how organisations deploy systems such as finance, HR, and supply chain: each system is operated as a discrete entity running on its own hardware platform that has been sized to accommodate that department’s predicted growth.
