I started out in IT as a humble analyst programmer, more years ago than I care to remember, developing systems in languages such as COBOL and Assembler. We had long windows overnight for batch updates of systems, any Service Level Agreements (SLAs) were determined by the IT department, and any changes to systems were met with timescale estimates also by the IT department, with business needs some way down the list.
