Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems for US$7.4 billion has met a stumbling block in the shape of the EU Competition Commission, which has concerns over, of all things, the fate of the MySQL open source database. This is something that doesn’t appear to have worried the US DoJ, which approved the deal after a long investigation.

Last week saw the official launch of ‘Windows 7’, the desktop operating system successor to Windows Vista. However, contrary to Microsoft’s branding of its new operating system, Windows 7 is in fact Windows ‘version 6.1’. Because no IT manager likes a ‘point-zero’ release of anything, Windows 7 should in theory appeal to organisations planning desktop system upgrades, just as Windows XP (version 5.1) did soon after the release of Windows 2000 Professional (version 5.0).

One of the consequences of all the changes in the enterprise application sector (new architectures and platforms, new lifecycle and upgrade strategies, and new delivery and pricing models) is that the traditional on-premise, licensed application model is being challenged and there is a clear realisation that there are viable alternatives. Whilst Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has captured much of the market attention, Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning (OS ERP) exists as another underutilised alterna…

When Google announced Google Chrome OS on 7 July 2009 it caused a flurry of excitement and comment that died away just as quickly as it had started. Initial comments seemed to be split between the ‘Microsoft-bashers’ that view any potential threat to Microsoft’s PC Operating System (OS) monopoly as being a great step, and the pessimists that saw a vanishingly limited potential user base for the new OS. Since then the relatively small degree of follow-up seems to indicate a widely held ‘who cares?’ attitu…

During a keynote address last week at Computex 2009 in Taipei, Microsoft’s Steve Guggenheimer (VP of Microsoft’s OEM Division) announced that Windows 7 will be Released To Manufacturing (RTM) in the second half of July this year, and that General Availability (GA) is planned for 22 October 2009. During the announcement, Mr. Guggenheimer also said: “we’ve received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays.”

Sun Microsystems (1982-2009) perhaps never scaled the heights that its technology and innovations demanded. Despite being the driving force behind Java, and having its fifth employee (John Gage) credited with the phrase “the network is the computer” (which was a scarily accurate predictive statement when one looks at it from an historical perspective), for some reason the company never managed to be perceived as one of the ‘big boys’. This could hardly be put down to the shy and retiring nature of its lo…

Steve Ballmer picked up the baton from Bill Gates last week as he delivered his first keynote speech at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas. Attended by trade and industry professionals, CES is the showcase for all manner of consumer-oriented technology, and this year boasted some 2,700 exhibitors. In his speech, the Microsoft CEO talked about the state of the IT industry and the need for continued innovation. Mr. Ballmer concluded his presentation by informing the au…
